14 Tips for Preventing Mail Theft

Mail and package theft is unfortunately common whether you live in an apartment or detached home. Thieves target mail because it’s often very easy to steal. Packages often contain valuables and can even have personal information which can aid in identity theft.

Here are some tips to prevent mail theft:

  • Have your package sent to the nearest pickup point instead of delivered to your home. It can be more inconvenient but at least it won’t be stolen from your front porch or vestibule!
  • If you can work from home, try to be there when you’re expecting a delivery.
  • Ask a neighbour to grab the package for you and keep it safe until you’re home to get it.
  • If you move, make sure you change your address with Canada post. You can arrange for mail to be forwarded.
  • If you’ll be away and can’t arrange to have someone pick up your mail, arrange to have it held at the post office.
  • Consider getting a P.O. box at the post office if you have a lot of mail.
  • If you live in a condo or apartment, leave drop off instructions.
  • Invest in a security camera for your home.
  • Install motion-activated lighting or keep your lights on.
  • Invest in an anti-theft mailbox.
  • Make it look like someone is home.
  • Opt for electronic bills and communications where possible.
  • If available, you can request signature upon delivery. Some businesses will also require this for higher-value items.
  • Keep an eye on your packages via the delivery tracking and pick them up as soon as possible when they’re delivered.

If you’re really concerned about theft, the best option is to arrange for the package to be dropped off at a pick up point (Canada Post offers this service and most delivery companies have pick-up points you can choose to deliver to).

If your mail is stolen, you can report the crime to the non-emergency police line. Unfortunately, mail theft is not often prosecuted but it should still be reported. You should also report it to the delivery service.
